One of the largest and wealthiest villages in the region, 3 kms from Sitia on the road to Ierapetra. The ruins of a Minoan villa were found in the area together with many artefacts such as idols, human and animal figurines, small clay houses etc. These can now be seen in the Archaeological Museum at Heraklion. It appears that Piskokefalo used to be the feudal property of the Kornaros family, one of whose descendants was Vitsentzos Kornaros - author of the poem "Erotokritos"- who is considered one of the greatest poets in Greece. The house and mill of the Kornaros family can still be seen in the village.
