The strange stone shapes of the Sitian landscape lend themselves to the formation of caves and there are thought to be over 300 caves in the area. Some of the caves show evidence of human habitation, something which gives credence to the theory that the region was inhabited long before the arrival of the Minoans. It is believed that the caves played in important role in religious and therefore cultural development from prehistoric times up until the early Christian era.
